Just because the days are longer…

Hi Reader,

Oh, these long glorious days beyond the 45th parallel! Whether you live closer to the north or south pole, here’s a tip for how to enjoy those extra hours without trying to fill them up with doing more…

A few weeks ago, I mentioned a book I was reading: Four Thousand Week: Time Management for Mortals by Oliver Burkeman. I’ve been sitting with his recommendations for ”embracing your finitude” (i.e., you’re not gonna live forever) and wanted to share them with you:

1 Face the fact that you can’t get everything you want—in a day, a month, a lifetime—done (what he calls the “fixed volume approach”).

2 Don’t have more than 3 large projects going simultaneously (and if you need motivation, know you can add a new project once you complete one of the current three).

👉 this one is my favorite: 3 Decide in advance what to fail at.

4 Focus on what you’ve already completed: instead of creating a “to do” list, create a “got done” list and write down everything as you complete it each day.

5 Consolidate your caring. Decide what you care about most so you aren’t distracted by too many things, worthy as they may be. Pick your battles in charity, activism, and effort.

6 Embrace boring, single-use technology, like a watch that tells time or a camera that takes still photos.

7 Seek out novelty in the mundane; pay attention to every moment.

8 Think of yourself as a researcher of relationships: try to figure out who the person you’re with is with an attitude of curiosity and no goal in mind.

9 Do stuff now (act on impulse and generosity) rather than putting off until later.

10 Practice doing nothing.

Some of these I’ve been working on for a while (7, 8, and 10), though I’m not as consistent as I’d like to be (maybe I should plan to fail at them). Three of them I’m eager to try (1, 2, and 3). I love checking off to-do lists too much to switch to a “got done” list (#4). And since I’m trying #2, I won’t attempt any more recommendations for now.

If you are willing to acknowledge that you just don’t have all the time you’d like, which ones can you embrace? Which recommendations speak to you? (Really, I'm interested. Reply!)

If you're looking for ways to save time and you're a small business owner, I'm featuring my course on Business Systems to Make Your Doula Life Easier for only $5. (It works for more than doulas!) On sale through Monday, April 28, with discount code savetime.

What I'm listening to, reading, and watching:

Children Play with Earth — Arrested Development. Set down your Nintendo joysticks right now / Unplug the television … Dig your hands in the dirt / Children play with earth. Happy Earth Day folks!

James — Percival Everett. The re-telling of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn through the eyes of the character, Jim. Casts brilliant insights into the inner worlds of enslaved people and the privileged folks around them.

A Little White Lie — Billed as a comedy, l didn’t laugh at all. However, I found the main character, Shriver, and his life as maybe a writer, quite interesting. The other characters were too stereotyped, but to consider how writing, heartbreak, fame, and misfortune can get all balled up into one confused mind was intriguing. (Netflix)

What are you listening to, reading, or watching that you think I’d like? Reply and let me know.

Let me know if there's anything special you'd like to hear about in the coming weeks. Just reply and I'm on it!

Hoping 🎵 ti-i-i-ime is on your side 🎵!

Thanks for reading,

Carrie

Hi Reader, My granddaughter drives for Instacart. She has an insider’s view into what people buy. And the perspective of what people used to buy compared to what they’re buying now. We recently had a conversation about “voting with your wallet.” She’d never heard the expression before so I explained it to her: Every time you spend money on something, you are—in essence—voting with your wallet. You are choosing 1) to buy anything at all, 2) what to buy, and 3) who to buy it from. The most...
