Hi Reader, Every May 1, my dad would get up and sing: Hooray, hooray! The first of May! Outdoor screwing starts today! — Vern Dunlap I loved his enthusiasm and cheer (and his unintentional nod to the Beltane ritual) but as a little girl, I was so confused why using screwdrivers outside was such a big deal… Gives me a chuckle every year! 😆 Here’s something you might find confusing… What’s the deal with me and doulas? Why do I talk about them, write about them, and teach about them? I do seem a bit obsessed. Well, I am. My passion for doulas goes far beyond my original devotion to helping people in birth. After I started working as a birth doula in 2001, I discovered that what a doula does for a person in labor can be done for someone who is dying, divorcing, adopting, grieving, marrying, gender transitioning…basically going through any physically or emotionally demanding situation. I want to expand the concept of doulas to someone who supports any challenging life event and I want to establish myself as the voice for doulas breaking into all of these fields. So I’m writing another book about doula. This new book will help anyone interested in the healing or helping professions understand how doulas work and why they achieve the best outcomes for their clients. I want people in healthcare, the justice system, social work, family support, and deathcare to see the doula role as a viable career option, or show anyone already working in those fields how to incorporate doula skills into their work to provide enhanced support for their clients. My new book (tentatively titled The Doula Way) will complement a new course I’m creating and you are invited to take the first live version of it with me for FREE.
If you are interested in being a doula (any kind of doula), are already working as a health and wellness provider, or know anyone who is, sign up for Doula Magic: An Introductory Course for Healing & Helping Entrepreneurs to learn:
You can learn more about the course here but be sure to click on the button above or below to be my guest for free. Doula Magic will be held live on June 25, 2025, from 10am-1pm PDT.
What I'm listening to, reading, and watching: Feeling Good — Nina Simone. Need help remembering what you have to feel good about in these troubling times? Take a listen. I’m writing, not reading this week. The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry — I was intrigued because this film is set in an old-fashioned bookstore and I love old-fashioned bookstores. It centers around the bookstore owner who has been chosen to raise an abandoned 2-year-old child because her mom can no longer care for her and wants her to be raised around books. The kid is adorable, the characters are interesting, the plot has some nice twists, and the production is a little too Hallmark-y for my liking, but overall a good watch. (Netflix) What are you listening to, reading, or watching that you think I’d like? Reply and let me know. Let me know if there's anything special you'd like to hear about in the coming weeks. Just reply and I'm on it! Happy May! Get on out there and do your thing! Thanks for reading, Carrie Author, So You Want to Be a Doula |

Hi Reader, I was talking with a friend recently about how misinformation has turned our world upside down. Sure, there have always been liars and charlatans, cheaters and fearmongers. But since the advent of the internet and social media—where everyone and anyone can instantly create something and post it as fact— the impact of lies has been widespread. When I was studying world history in junior high, I was fascinated by propaganda. My textbook showed images of buildings in China plastered...

Hi Reader, What is mandatory for doulas and necessary for everyone else? Unfortunately, the word “self care” is so overused and misunderstood that most folks resist it. In fact, as soon as you saw the word, you may have been tempted to close this email. "I don’t have time for self care." "I already do self care." "Self care is only for the privileged." We have been conditioned to believe those ideas but all they do is continue to keep us overwhelmed and depressed. So here’s what I want you to...
