[Carrie's Weekly News] This happens every summer…

Hi Reader,

It happens every year right about now...

I’m launching a product that seemed like a great idea 3 months ago…

My schedule is all discombobulated because it gets dark so late I don’t even think about making dinner until it’s 9 o’clock…

I notice the days are starting to get shorter already so I panic and want to play outside more…

And next thing I know, a month has gone by and I haven’t sent an email to y’all!

Well, this year is no different.

I just wrapped up two projects. The one I thought of 3 months ago (Doula Magic is now in the bag!) and another one that popped up out of the blue: a new Substack account.

You should have received my invite to join me on Substack. It’s where I’m going to be sharing all my writing that’s focused on doulas, and I’ll be pre-releasing chapters of my two upcoming books to paid subscribers, so if you’re interested in that, make sure you get subscribed.

That will leave my emails here more focused on other stuff going on in my world: marketing and business coaching, doula training, writing support, and the sacred feminine.

And the Doula Magic course? It’s the bomb! I’m so pleased with how it turned out. Learn about why doulas are so effective at improving outcomes in stressful situations and reducing trauma, how they do what they do, where doulas are most helpful, 20 different doula roles, and how to incorporate doulas skills in your personal life, work life, and community.

Now all I have to do is promise myself I will not start another big project until Fall.

What I'm listening to, reading, and watching:

Young Lion — Sade. Sade’s 2024 tribute to her transgender son. Absolutely beautiful.

Sinners — I wasn’t even interested in this movie because I heard it was a horror film, and I don’t like them. But then I read some intriguing reviews, and my niece bought it on Prime, so I was in. My verdict? I was surprised. That I loooooved it. Even though it’s a vampire movie, the subtext—how it explores the concept of freedom, the woven histories of trauma—plus the Klan getting gunned down in the end, and the music—oh, the music!—was perfectly divine. Streaming everywhere.

Parable of the Sower — Octavia Butler. I’d started this book numerous times but this time I finally finished it. Now I know why. It was wild reading a book about the “future” which opens with a journal entry from 2024, then following along as we march through 2025, past the date I was reading it, and right on into 2027. No biggy for speculative fiction, except that so much of what Butler wrote about as “the future” is happening. Now. And I wouldn’t have gotten that if I’d finished it years ago. I don’t want a 2027 like in the book (though I feel as prepared as the protagonist). But the kicker was the bonus opening chapter of the next book in this series, featuring a presidential candidate whose motto is “Make America Great Again.” I literally froze when I read that and chills raced across my body. Well, shit, Ms. Butler. I wish you weren’t so damned right.

What are you listening to, reading, or watching that you think I’d like? Reply and let me know.

Thanks for taking time out of your summer to read with me today. Now go play!

XOXO Carrie

Hi Reader, Three months ago, I started a job. The j.o.b. kind, where you clock in, report to someone, and have coworkers. I haven’t done this in over 25 years. It’s a trip. The logistical adjustments have been pretty easy. I don’t go in until the afternoon, so I have mornings wide open. I actually enjoy the routine of working on my business in the morning, then getting dressed, eating lunch before I leave, packing my dinner, driving on autopilot to the same destination, and parking in the...

Hi Reader, I tolerate AI. ✋On one hand, I’m appalled that AI companies have stolen authors’ content and violated copyright laws with impunity. And I HATE AI Google results. AI is notorious for pulling inaccurate information, so why do AI results get top spot??? (Plus, it’s ruining any chance of SEO results for small businesses.) 🤚On the other hand, those small businesses can set up AI to function as a virtual assistant, chat desk, analyst, and more, without jacking up overhead costs. Heck,...
