[Carrie’s Weekly News] Is it summer yet? 😎

Hi Reader,

Yesterday, we enjoyed a glorious sunny and 80° day. This morning, it's 56° and raining. This is what life is like in the Pacific Northwest, where it won’t really be summer until after Fourth of July. As someone who absolutely adores the sun and warmth, here are some of the things I’ve done over the years to pretend it’s summer in May:

🌞 When I was a kid, as soon as the first sunny day took the chill out of the air, I’d pull on a tank top and shorts, toss off my shoes, and run around barefoot, sure that summer had arrived.

🌞 As a teenager, I’d tan myself in the backyard, laying flat on the ground to avoid even the slightest breeze that would remind me it was still in the 60s.

🌞 As a gardener, I built a greenhouse to trap the heat and get a jump start on summer. Both the seedlings and I would thrive inside, even if we had a late snowfall in April.

🌞 Now, I just sit in my parked car on a cool but sunny day when the rays aren’t quite strong enough to heat up the outside air. I put on my sunglasses, have a cold drink, and turn on DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince’s ‘Summertime.’ The perfect summer fake-out!

Now, I know you friends in the south and midwest may laugh at my summer-chasing antics. You’ve already enjoyed plenty of gorgeous sunny days this month. But here in Western Washington, we still have a ways to go. (But don’t worry, I won’t hold it against you…or neener-neener you when you’re melting for the next three months).

But once summer finally arrives, I have a Top 3 list of things I must do:

#1 Go camping

#2 Swim in Lake Washington

#3 Lay on a beach and eat Cheetos and drink a Dr. Pepper

This year, I get to add something extra to my summer! I have a long weekend (August 7-10) reserved at Pack Forest Conference Center for an adult “summer camp” retreat. And you are invited. But here’s the best part: You get to choose what we do at camp! Whether you can come or not, let me know what your ideal summer camp for grown-ups will include.

I can already smell the pine duff warming in the sun, feel the cool reprieve of the shady forest, and taste the s’mores fresh off the bonfire. Do you want to join me? Get on the contact list here.

I hope the sun is out wherever you are. And that warmth, flowers, and love surrounds you.

Let me know if there's anything special you'd like to hear about in the coming weeks. Just reply and I'm on it!

Thanks for reading,

Carrie

Hi Reader, You know what to do to prevent getting sick this winter, right? ✔️ Keep warm ✔️ Eat healthy ✔️ Wear a mask around sick people ✔️ Wash your hands frequently Those are relatively easy, well-known precautions. But what do you do to ward off low energy, a dismal mood, or becoming a hermit when the temperatures dip and it’s dark by 4:00pm? The truth is: you already know how to do this. Surviving long nights and cold days is built in your DNA. But modern life—rigid schedules, hectic...

Hi Reader, A lot of my time is spent reading. As a writer, it’s my ethical and professional responsibility to read other writers. Thank goodness I love it. Reading allows me to explore the voices of many writers on multiple platforms. There are folks I follow on Medium and Substack, Facebook, in The Sun magazine, and in books. I learn about the power of the written word from the format they use, their style, phrasing, and the themes they write about. One of the writers I’ve been following for...

Hi Reader, Whenever we roll into October, three things come to my mind: How long can I wait to turn on the heat? (yesterday, it turns out) Did I finish off last year’s Halloween candy yet? (nope, still some Snickers to go!) The season of sun and harvests is coming to an end and the magic of Samhain is near 🌘 (boo and yay!) In honor of the cross-quarter day between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice (Samhain, October 31), and in preparation for the coming months of short days and cold...
