Carrie’s Weekly News — I’ve been held hostage by a new book

Hi Reader,

It was just supposed to be a short guide on how to become a doula. It would focus on three types of doulas: birth, postpartum, and death.

The goal: help people figure out what kind of doula they can be before they take their training.

When I was training doulas, only 10% went on and did the work they trained for. Not because there was something wrong with my training.

Because people didn't know what being a birth doula would entail.

So much time, money, and passion were wasted and they felt stuck.

I have a way to change all that.

In this new book (which I'm writing, if you haven't figured that out yet), I help people:

1) figure out what kind of doula will work for where they're at in life

2) which training will be the best fit so they don't take one they won't use

3) prepare to start their doula business before they're done training so they don't lose momentum

🌟 The book outlines 28 different types of doula roles.

Twenty-eight?! Yep, that’s how many different kinds of doulas there are (and I admit some of them — like pet adoption/loss — are quite obscure). I’ve researched each one to show readers what each role consists of.

🌟 The book includes questionnaires to help readers match themselves to the doula role(s) that would work best for them, surveys to learn about learning styles and training options, and assessment tools to identify the training that will meet their needs.

The publishing date is scheduled for June 30 but you can pre-order your copy today.

⇨ When you order today, you get the ebook at a discounted price for pre-sales only (only $9.99) AND you get a sneak peek at 3 free chapters to download immediately!

The Weekly Vlog/Blog

I took the entire month of May off from vlogging and blogging. I had a whole series planned and just wasn’t “feeling it.” Turns out, I’d been really disconnected from some of the roots that had fed me for years and I needed to spend time doing some excavating.

I’ve been doing a deep dive into my spirituality and reconnecting with the sacred feminine. Now I’m feeling reenergized and alive. I have a whole series planned for June where I’ll share what prompted this recent revival and what’s come out of it.

This month’s FREE workshop:

The Art of Doula Networking: Cultivating Relationships, Referrals, and Backups is coming Tuesday, June 11, 10-11:30am PDT

What I'm listening to, reading, and watching:

The River is Flowing — Sun Bear, performed by Larisa Gosla. One of my favorite goddess chants which came back to me this week.

Yellowface — R.F. Kuang. From the opening page, the author starts lobbing opportunism, plagiarism, privilege, racism, cultural appropriation, social media, and cancel culture at you. There’s no escape and you know this can’t possibly end well. As one reviewer said: I didn't like any of the characters, and yet I enjoyed the story because the personalities were so well written. Despite all that, I do recommend it.

The American Society of Magical Negroes — This movie got bad reviews but I thought it was brilliant. A secret society of Black folks whose job is to appease white people to protect Black people from their harm. Superbly acted by Justice Smith.

What are you listening to, reading, or watching that you think I’d like? Reply and let me know.

Let me know if there's anything special you'd like to hear about in the coming weeks. Just reply and I'm on it!

Thanks for reading,

Carrie

Hi Reader, You know what to do to prevent getting sick this winter, right? ✔️ Keep warm ✔️ Eat healthy ✔️ Wear a mask around sick people ✔️ Wash your hands frequently Those are relatively easy, well-known precautions. But what do you do to ward off low energy, a dismal mood, or becoming a hermit when the temperatures dip and it’s dark by 4:00pm? The truth is: you already know how to do this. Surviving long nights and cold days is built in your DNA. But modern life—rigid schedules, hectic...

Hi Reader, A lot of my time is spent reading. As a writer, it’s my ethical and professional responsibility to read other writers. Thank goodness I love it. Reading allows me to explore the voices of many writers on multiple platforms. There are folks I follow on Medium and Substack, Facebook, in The Sun magazine, and in books. I learn about the power of the written word from the format they use, their style, phrasing, and the themes they write about. One of the writers I’ve been following for...

Hi Reader, Whenever we roll into October, three things come to my mind: How long can I wait to turn on the heat? (yesterday, it turns out) Did I finish off last year’s Halloween candy yet? (nope, still some Snickers to go!) The season of sun and harvests is coming to an end and the magic of Samhain is near 🌘 (boo and yay!) In honor of the cross-quarter day between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice (Samhain, October 31), and in preparation for the coming months of short days and cold...
